This survey is was conducted from June to August 1997 by Datafolha Research Institute in preparation for the
2nd International Newspaper in Education Conference, which is being organized by the World
Association of Newspapers and the Brazilian Newspaper Association (ANJ) in collaboration
with the Inter-American Press Association.
The questions were answered via Internet by young people throughout the world, often in a
school setting. Data tabulation was done in Brazil and are available at http://www2.uol.com.br/survey/

Conference on Newspapers in Education
The International Conference on Newspapers and Education is an event promoted every two
years by the World Association of Newspapers (Fiej)
with the purpose of fostering and discussing the use of means of communication, especially
newspapers in Education. Each edition of the conference takes place in a different country
and explores different themes. The 1997 Conference, was held in São
Paulo on September 10th and 11th, may attracted more than 300 experts on the subject
and newspaper editors throughout the world, who will discussed youngsters
expectations as to 21st century media, as well as how technological innovations in
communications can contribute to educate new generations.
Promoters: World Association of Newspapers (Fiej)
The World Association of Newspapers is an international body composed of newspaper
companies, news agencies, executives and national press associations from 73 countries.
Its members account for approximately 15 thousand publications. Based in Paris,
Fiejs actions aim at Press Freedom, and at fostering newspaper media and the use of
newspapers in education. Inter-American Press Society (SIP)
The Interamerican Press Association is a non-profitable organization, established in 1926
and reorganized in 1950. Based in Miami (USA), this association is made up of newspaper
companies and their executives from all over the continent. Its objectives are supporting
Press Freedom, fostering the development of press in the Americas, fighting for dignity,
rights and responsibility of press activities, as well as encouraging ethical, editorial,
technical and managerial enhancement of printed media. National Newspapers Association
(NAN)
The National Association of Newspapers (NAN) is a civil, non-profitable association, made
up of newspaper companies, and founded in August 17th, 1979. Since 1986, it has been based
in Brasilia, Brazils capital. NANs board is composed of publishing companies
of Brazilian daily, paid newspapers that have been published in Portuguese for at least
three years in a row, except for official agencies or those dependent on corporations of
public right. Its present social board has 105 members, of which 103 are newspapers, and
two, contributors.
